President's Commentary

Message from our President Robert Morris

I hope that this finds all of you in good health and that each and everyone was able to spend Christmas with family and dear friends.  We truly enjoyed Christmas with our family and that is the second most important thing about the season right after the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

I want to extend thanks to last years officers for their efforts in making last year a very good year.  We have seen a steady increase in meeting attendance and in participation in rod runs and other activities.  Let's work together this year to continue the trend.  The economy is still pretty shaky and is probably going be that way for awhile but we can still plan some runs and attend local shows or functions.  Hopefully we can come up with a money making function for the club this year to replace the Nostalgia Drags.

Everyone likes the cars and everyone likes the trophies but it's the people that make this hobby great.  I have met scores of people at car functions and they are great people who eagerly share ideas, advice or just friendly conversation.  Our club is made up of the same type of people and Mary and I are proud to be members.

Here's to a new year filled with good health and good cruising.

Robert Morris

Addendum:

John (Majalca) last month mentioned that the Club purchased some Club Plaques for the members to display on the rear of their cars.

We've had numerous requests for club plaques from some of the membership.  I contacted O'Brien truckers regarding an order for some more.  These plaques will sell to the members for $25 each.  Hopefully that'll inspire some additional members to fly our colors, plaque wise.

Another idea John had was to bolster the Hill Country Street Rods image, we might think of getting some new shirts, other than the traditional T-shirt.  I was thinking more of a dressy type along the lines of a medium priced golf style shirt.

Activity Director's Commentary

Message from our Activities Director, Dan Bowen

Happy New Year to all of you. Can't believe that the years are flying by so fast.  It just seems like a few years ago we just got started in this great hobby.   Now, 30 years later we are still having fun with our cars.  But, I can't think of a better way to spend or leisurely time.  Of course, with the exception of spending time with our family, that's what I'm talking about.

Well we traveled around Texas seeing our family just like many of you may have done during the Holiday Season.  While we were in Plano visiting my son Steve and his family, we encountered very cold temperatures and even snow.  Much more then we see in Austin, but it was cold and these RV's are NOT made for the cold weather.  Luckily we had two electric heaters and we were in an RV park where we can plug in.  Now we are leaving and heading south to Houston to my other son Danny's family.  Hopefully it is warmer there.

I would like to thank all of you who attended the wonderful Party that the Club held at Poke Joe's.  Sorry a few of you could not make it because you really missed a good time.  We had a lot of laughs and I think it's safe to say everyone, especially spouses, had a great time.

Well, with the new year just a few days away as I'm writing this message, I would like all of you to make a New Year's resolution.

How about if;
(a) the Club has an event each month in addition to the meeting, and
(b) you attend either an event or the club meeting (or both) every month?

We had a few events last year and we had a good turnout for each of them. Let's try to have a bigger turnout this coming year and really have some fun. I know that you will enjoy yourselves.

Thank you for your confidence in the selection of officers again. We will all strive to keep the spirit and fun for the Club going on. Be sure to attend the next meeting and be sure to check out the new additions to the website and the photos from years past.

Have a safe, healthy and happy New Year and may all your wishes come true.

Dan

Secretary's Report, "Meeting Minutes and Special Reports"

Minutes of HCRS December 2009 meeting

The Hill Country Street Rod Christmas party/meeting took place on December 3, 2009 at Poke' Joes.  We enjoyed brisket, ribs and all the trimmings.   John Majalca called the meeting to order.  The treasury report was given by Anne and the minutes were accepted as in the newsletter.  A special thanks was given to Dan for making the arrangements for the Christmas party for us all to enjoy.

Dan gave his report regarding the Buda Fest Parade and requested that all those wishing to participate be at the field by 8:30 am.  He also reported that we will continue with monthly stories from members as we did this past year.

Dan and Kay presented plaques to the most active members of the club, Graham and Anne Phares; Robert and Mary Morris; John and Gloria Majalca; Don and Donna Seville; and Dan and Kay Bowen. John Majalca passes the office of President to Robert Morris for the next year.   Don Seville will be V.P., and Kay Bowen will be secretary, and Anne Phares will remain the treasurer.  John and Dan said they had ordered new club plaques.   The meeting was adjourned and the gift exchange began.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Morris, Secretary

"The Ones That Got Away"

Presented by Don Sevall

Have you ever thought about the ones that got away?  Don't!  It'll make you sick.

If you are anything like me, I've thrown enough car opportunities away to have financed my retirement.

It started when I was about thirteen, of course at that age I could not have acted upon my desires, but as I look back, that was the beginning of my being "Car Crazy".

My grandfather was on the phone with the local salvage yard, due to my grandmother dialing the phone and strongly urging my grandfather to give up one of his three cars.  I still remember what grandma told grandpa, "John, you have three cars, and you must get rid of one of them, because it's killing the grass under the maple tree", thus the conversation with the local salvage yard, which went like this . . . "you say you'll give me $17 if I drive it there, and $15 if you have to pick it up, well I'll just drive it down to you for the extra two dollars".

The car in question was a 1933 La Salle Luxury sedan, with jump seats and duel side mount spare tires.  This was my grandpa's, "Sunday take to meeting" car, that we all would pile into for our Sunday afternoon drive to Chicago.  Most people have never seen one much less ridden in one.

Well, that was just the first missed opportunity of many more to come.

Two houses down from my grandparents, was a late twenties or early thirties, Franklin, air cooled sedan, garaged for many years.  I had wanted it for many years, and was told that he would never sell it.  So I told my girlfriends dad about it, and next thing I knew, he bought it, resold it and made a killing on it.

Missed again!

The same guy I bought my first car from, which was a 1930 Model A coupe, for $125, took me for a ride in his 1932 Chevy pick up, that he wanted to sell me for $175.   My parents said NO!!

Another missed opportunity . . . all that before I was twenty years old.

Then there was the guy I had gone to school with, that wanted me to buy his 1953 Corvette, after all, who wanted a 6 cylinder Corvette, and another guy, that saw me in my Jaguar 140 coupe, wanted me to buy his Cobra, because the gravel dented his aluminum fenders, but it didn't have roll up windows or a radio.  That was just too rustic for me.

Of course I've already told you about the thirties Packard Opera Coupe for $75, when I was in college and broke.  And their was a couple more after I was married, of course, they were one of a kind finds, that my wife said, save up your money and I'm sure there will ALWAYS be another one.  But, dear, they only made a limited number of 1936 Ford four door convertibles, and 1931 Ford Victoria's, which I still have a picture of.

But in conclusion, their were a couple I did buy, with the threat of divorce.   One was a 1961 XK150s Jaguar, roadster for $250, that I sold many years later for $5,000, and found out 6 months later, that it was worth $25,000, because they only made 851 of them.  Oh well!

And the last one, which almost caused a double divorce.  I put up the money for my son in law to purchase one of those, one of a kind cars, because you know that being "Car Crazy" is catching, and he got the bug, only twelve known in existence, a 1941 Hollywood Graham.

It's our "future project" when he SAVES enough money to work on it . . . .  I hope I'm still alive.

At least it's ONE that didn't get away . . .

Don't let opportunities pass you by,

Submitted by, Don Sevall
